Armpit Detox: The Benefits and How to Do It Properly

Armpit Detox

Sweat is a completely natural function. However, in today's society, it is looked on as a sign that you are unhygienic. For that reason, regular deodorants contain ingredients that act as an antiperspirant. These ingredients are most commonly aluminum compounds. They create plugs that block sweat in your sweat ducts. But like I said before, sweat is a natural function, so when your pits are unable to sweat, it can be fairly bad for your body. The process of an armpit detox is rather simple, but it can be an unpleasant and uncomfortable experience.

Why Is It Good to Sweat?

Helps Flush Toxins & Cool the Body Down

Sweating is your body's way of cooling down. And since your armpits are in a constant state of heat and friction, they tend to sweat a lot. However, there is more to sweat than just cooling the body down. It is also a way of for the body to get rid of certain toxins that may be inside and on you. There are many benefits to sweating that everyone should be aware of.

Helps Stop Bloating

Sweating could happen from a hard workout, when you get nervous, or when you are talking to a pretty girl/ handsome guy. We are bred to think of sweat as disgusting, hence the reason why we get uncomfortable when we start to sweat. However, that sweat is really great for your body. When we sweat, we mainly release salt, cholesterol, and alcohol. One strong theory is that, based on that information, sweating can actually de-bloat us, clean out clogged arteries, and help with a hangover (start listening college kids). Sweat also can contain antibacterial agents, such as dermcidin, that can rapidly help kill other bacteria. This effectively helps to heal certain types of wounds like mosquito bites or scratches.

Helps Prevent Kidney Stones

It has also been shown that sweating can effectively help prevent the development of kidney stones. Obviously, kidney stones are partly created by excessive salt build up. Since one of the major substances in sweat is salt, if that is expelled from the body, it can greatly reduce the risk of those painful little stones from forming. Sweating during exercise is a two-fer, because not only are you getting rid of excess salt, your body also will require more water which will help flush your kidneys.

Helps Open Sweat Glands and Skin Pores

If you are one of the many people who struggle with breakouts and zits, then sweating is highly beneficial for you. Like I said before, sweating helps to release toxins from inside our body and on the skin. By opening up those sweat glands and your pores, the sweat can force out whatever dirt or toxins that may be causing your breakouts. Facial creams can be effective, but you'll probably be spending less, and benefiting your body far more by just sweating it out.

While not all of these benefits are the result of an armpit detox, they are good things to keep in mind. Your armpits are some of the dirtiest places on your body. Full of bacteria, dirt, and whatever else. By allowing your pits to sweat, you can effectively get rid of those toxins from your body. Adding in a decent deodorizer with natural antibacterial agents couldn't hurt either.

What Is an Armpit Detox?

Now there are a few different ways that you can do an armpit detox. The most obvious and honestly easiest way is to not wear deodorant. Let your armpits be naked for a while. Let the sweat come naturally. Now like I again said before, this way can be a bit uncomfortable, especially if you have to go out in public and are self-conscience about pit stains.

Luckily, there is another way of doing an armpit detox. This way requires some at home mixing of certain ingredients, making a mask of sorts and applying it to your armpits. The most common armpit detox mask includes three ingredients. Bentonite clay, apple cider vinegar, and water. You can find bentonite clay anywhere. You will need 1 tablespoon of the bentonite clay, one tablespoon of the apple cider vinegar, and 1-2 tablespoons of water.

Mix all of the ingredients in a glass bowl, until the consistency of the mixture is similar to yogurt. Then spread the mixture in an even layer on each armpit. You will have to do this a few times. Leave it on your pits for just a few minutes, slowly increasing the time during later applications, but no longer than 20 minutes. Lastly, wash the mixture off with warm water. It is also important at this time to not use any deodorant. You can redo this process as many times as you want.

What Does an Armpit Detox Do?

There are a lot of benefits to an armpit detox. Of course this helps your body to release toxins, but it also does a lot more. Doing an armpit detox will help you if you are planning on transitioning to a natural deodorant. These guys are a lot different than regular, commercial brands, but I'll cover them in a moment.

Most likely, if you quit regular deodorants cold turkey and go straight to natural brands, you will experience the uncomfortable situation (and maybe disappointing) of your pits sweating far more than usual. This may lead you to believe that the natural product you just spent a decent amount of money on is complete BS. That is not always the case. While natural deodorant does tend to struggle with effectiveness, there are some really great ones out there. More than likely, your pits are just getting used to not being clogged down anymore. Therefore, doing an armpit detox will prepare your pits for the coming change.

While washing your pits in the shower will remove any buildup from past deodorants, the armpit detox will also do that as well. However, it does a bit more than just get rid of that white build up. The detox will also extract any sweat clogs that are still in your underarms. This goes hand in hand with removing toxins that may lie behind those clogs. Once they are out, the toxins can be released, and your body can begin to improve.

Using Natural Deodorant

Going back to natural deodorants for a moment. A very common complaint when using natural deodorants is skin irritation. One way to avoid this is to simply not get a deodorant that has something that you are either sensitive to or allergic to. But if you are in real pain, this armpit detox will help to soothe and reduce the irritation caused by that product. While the detox will not prevent further irritation from occurring, it definitely will make it bearable.

Possible Side Effects

Now, as it with most things, there are some side effects that you may suffer from when doing an armpit detox. While it is nothing truly serious, it is still something to think about. If you are doing a natural detox, which is where you just leave your armpits be and let them sweat naturally, the most you will probably experience is some body odor and uncomfortable wetness.

When it comes to the armpit mask, there are a few more side effects you might experience. This may include some slight skin irritation, in response to the apple cider vinegar. This probably will not be anything too serious, but it may be uncomfortable and give a raw feeling for a bit. Best thing to do is keep them moisturized with cream or aloe vera gel.

Honestly, the worst thing that can come from an armpit detox is excessive sweating. But this will fade as your body gets used to not being blocked by deodorants.

Does It Really Work?

Scientific evidence does show that sweating releases toxins in your body or at the least, on the surface. However, and to be fully transparent, there is actually very little evidence to support the effectiveness of a armpit detox. The whole idea is to rid your body of any chemicals that may still be on your body after using regular deodorant. In light of recent research, however, many mainstream brands have done away with many of the harmful ingredients including parabens, phthalates, and many more.

The issue that still remains is aluminum. Now, the theory that aluminum can cause breast cancer is complete unsubstantiated. The aluminum that is in deodorant dissolves after a few hours of the application. Nevertheless, some people are still trying to live the greenest, most natural life possible. If you are, then of course, go for the armpit detox and use natural deodorant products. But in reality, the scientific benefits are little to none. This is the same for juice cleanses and the such... they do absolutely nothing for your body. However, that is just for the detox itself. The science remains that sweating is good for your body. But if you want to limit your sweat in your armpits, go right on ahead.

Final Thoughts:

Like a lot of these cleanses that are popular in the natural and eco communities, hipsters included, they only work if you believe they do. In reality, there is no scientific evidence that they really do anything. Now the science behind the benefits of sweating is still there and true. Sweating does release toxins in your body. They can prevent kidney stones from forming, but only if you change your diet and intake more water as well. It can help to heal small wounds like mosquito bites and such. But in terms of the detox itself, if you believe it works, then there ya go. Nevertheless, using less commercial brand deodorants is still a good idea.

An armpit detox is not complete BS. There are plenty of real benefits that include removing buildup and exfoliating your underarms. So if it sounds like something that you may want to do, then definitely go for it. It won't hurt.
