Avalon Organics Shampoo: Review
Review of the Avalon Organics Shampoo
Avalon Organics Shampoo is a pretty high-end product. It is sitting at 3.9 stars on Amazon, with a plethora of positive reviews. However, there are a few negative reviews that should be looked at. So, let's jump right into Avalon Organics Shampoo and see what's what.
Avalon Organics Shampoo is a scalp treatment shampoo. Basically if you suffer from scalp irritation, this shampoo uses a medley of tea tree essential oils, beta-glucan, aloe, quinoa protein, vitamin E to cleanse, balance moisture levels and soothe irritation.
In addition, they achieve this without using any harsh sulfates, parabens, or artificial preservatives. There are also no synthetic colors, fragrances, or phthalates. However, there are a few ingredients that need to be pointed out.
Taking a look at what is inside this shampoo, I am pleased to see that the bulk of the ingredients are plant based. However, the complete list of ingredients is actually not found on the Amazon product page, but on the Avalon Organics website. It seems that the Amazon seller forgot to either update the list or did not finish the list. Either way, the stuff left out is not particularly bad in any way. It is not like they are trying to hide any toxic chemicals.
The complete list of ingredients inside Avalon Organics Shampoo is as follows: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice(1), Aqua (Water), Coco-Glucoside, Lauryl Glucoside, Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Sorbitol, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Mentha Arvensis Leaf Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Avena Sativa (Oat) Bran, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract(1), Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract(1), Chenopodium Quinoa Seed(1), Tocopheryl Acetate, Beta-Glucan, Babassu Oil Polyglyceryl-4 Esters, Bisabolol, Citric Acid, Decyl Glucoside, Inulin(1), Sodium Sulfate, Alcohol(1), Benzyl Alcohol, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Limonene.
First things first. Every ingredient with a (1) next to it means that it is an organic certified ingredient. While there are not a lot of certified ingredients, the fact that they are in there is still awesome. Also, while Avalon Organics shampoo does claim that there are no harsh sulfates, this does contain sodium coco-sulfate and sodium sulfate. Both of these are still sulfates, while not as harsh as SLS or SLES. Nevertheless, SCS is a common alternative that still has some of the negative effects of SLS. Really hate to be seeing those ingredients. However, those are the only two controversial ingredients listed here. The rest of the ingredients, especially the botanical extracts are highly beneficial.
Like I said in the section above, there are 5 ingredients in total that are certified organic. Also, for anyone living the lifestyle, Avalon Organics Shampoo is certified as vegan. While we are talking about vegan, it is also worth mentioning that this shampoo is also cruelty free, which means it was never tested on animals. The bottle is also biodegradable, it contains no GMOs, and is certified by NSF/ANSI 305 and verified by EWG. NSF/ANSI 305 is the American National Standard for Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients. And the EWG verification means that it meets the Environmental Working Group's strictest criteria for ingredients, transparency, and health. So even with those two sulfate ingredients, it was still able to hold all of these certifications.

Avalon Organics Shampoo is full of great, botanical ingredients. There are also 5 ingredients that are certified organic. Each ingredient has its specific purpose in the shampoo.
This natural shampoo contains no synthetic fragrances, colors or preservatives, phthalates, parabens, or GMOs. It is also certified vegan, cruelty free, is biodegradable.
The ingredients inside Avalon Organics Shampoo really do work. Most of the botanical ingredients are great for soothing an irritated scalp and keeping your hair clean and healthy.
This shampoo holds a lot of certifications. These include vegan, organic, NSF/ANSI 305, and EWG. All for either the ingredients they use, or the way the company runs.
Unfortunately, Avalon Organics Shampoo does contain two sulfate ingredients. Sodium sulfate, and Sodium coco-sulfate. While neither is as harsh as SLS or SLES, they are still sulfates that can have the same effect as SLS. It is very disappointing to see them included in a mainly natural shampoo.
In addition, there are many negative reviews that complain about the same thing. That is that the shampoo seemed to have stripped their hair of moisture. This could be due to the sulfate ingredients, but there is really no way to be completely sure.
While there are a lot of great and beneficial ingredients inside Avalon Organics Shampoo, the inclusion of two different sulfate ingredients will most likely put it on the no fly list. When buying a natural product, the idea is to get away and avoid any and all chemicals, toxins, harmful ingredients, etc. Sulfates in any way, shape, and form are potentially harmful and should absolutely be avoided. Whether they are SLS, SLES, or SCS.
Avalon Organics Shampoo Conclusion
Overall, if it were not for the sulfates, this may have been a really great product. However, if you are looking for an organic shampoo, you are most likely trying to get away from sulfates.
