Classic Bamboo Sheets by Cariloha Review

Review of the Classic Bamboo Sheets by Cariloha

The Classic Bamboo Sheets by Cariloha are pretty nice bed sheets, and they are definitely a high-quality product. They are currently sitting at 4.4 stars on Amazon and are highly received by most people. There are a lot of claims behind these sheets, but it seems that most people buy them for the name, rather than the material. We are going to dive into these sheets and see what's what.

Item Specifics

These Classic Bamboo Sheets by Cariloha are made for a California king bed, which is the largest set available. They fit a bed size of 72 inches by 84 inches, with an 18-inch depth and a pillow size of 20 inches by 36 inches. They are made from viscose from bamboo, which is created using various—rather toxic—chemicals. However, none of the chemicals reside in the fabric after the processing.

The weave style is twill, which is the most durable weave of bamboo bedding available, even after repeatedly washing them. The product page, as well as the website, claim these have the softest weave. However, the softest weave is actually the sateen weave, with twill only being the most durable. Nevertheless, these sheets are still likely to be very soft, as viscose from bamboo is among the softest variants of bamboo sheets you can get.

The Classic Bamboo Sheets by Cariloha has a California king set that includes one flat sheet, one fitted sheet, and two pillowcases, which is about standard for most bedding sets. As for the color of the sheets, the only one available is ivory. The other bedding sizes are available in white, sage, blue, and a sandy brown. However, ivory is a nice base color that compliments any room and just about any bedding accessories, like a comforter for example. Also, the ivory is not as intensive as the white is, making it have a softer, more appealing shade to it.

Features

Now, if you have read our ultimate guide, you will know that viscose fabric is not in any way eco-friendly, and it does not retain really any benefits from the original bamboo plant. That being said, companies will still market their viscose fabric as green and more beneficial than regular bed sheets. (We also discuss this in our ultimate guide.) It seems that Cariloha is no different. Among their special features for their Classic Bamboo Sheets by Cariloha, they list their products as both green and clean. Now both are true, but it is only to an extent. These claims are also misleading.

Odor and Allergy Resistant Properties

When they say their bamboo sheets are clean, they explain it by saying that they have odor and allergy resistant properties. All the best bamboo sheets do tend to be hypoallergenic, due to the fact that bamboo is a hypoallergenic material. However, due to the chemical processing, these sheets do not retain any of the antimicrobial properties that the bamboo once had. In terms of their green claim, again they are only partially correct.

They go on to say that bamboo is an extremely renewable source. This and the fact that they harvest their materials in an environmentally sustainable way is the only part that is remotely true in their entire green statement. In the rest of their statement, they go on to claim that the materials are manufactured and produced very carefully, and in an environmentally sustainable way. However, the very process of making viscose includes very toxic chemicals, which makes the process not very friendly to the environment. The process results in a lot of wastewater as well.

Soft and Cool

Going on, the two other features they advertise are soft and cool. These two are very believable, unlike the first two I mentioned. While the twill weave is not the softest, viscose is among the softest bamboo material you can get. They do say that their Classic Bamboo Sheets by Cariloha are just as soft as 1,000 thread count Egyptian Cotton sheets, which are arguably the softest out there. The actual thread count for these sheets is 230.

Lastly, these sheets are cool. This is not just cool as in rad, but actually cool. They are three degrees cooler than other fabrics and carry thermal regulating properties that are able to keep you warm as well. That is not unheard of in bed sheets, but it is not entirely common either. Having that feature is definitely a good thing, not to mention cool, and by cool I mean awesome.

About This Company

Cariloha was founded in 2007 by creating island leisure products like watches, purses, sunglasses, and the like. They even developed sorbets with custom-made freezers that drew in vacationing customers. They ended up opening three stores in Cozumel, Ocho Rios, and St. Thomas when they realized that their product lines were not the right fit for their cruise port locations. Their work with bamboo started when they tested 5,000 bamboo shirts from their Southern California production facility and sent them to their stores. Within two weeks, they were completely sold out. This prompted the company to begin putting an emphasis on bamboo products.

In 2010, they licensed their first independent Cariloha store in the island of St. Maarten, as well as several stores in the US and Caribbean. By 2012, they had opened up 30 stores in 11 countries and have since become the only multi-store retailer in the world to provide an entire store experience completely made up of products made from the viscose from bamboo.

Now, they have an expansive product line, and they make all of their products from viscose from bamboo. Their products include mattresses, bedding, bathing products, products specifically for women, and products for men as well. Of course, their bedding also includes more than just sheets. Their bedding product line consists of pillow cases, duvet covers, blankets, sets for suite-style beds, and all different types and sizes of beds.

Pros:

The Classic Bamboo Sheets by Cariloha are available for any size bed. The ones reviewed here are for the California king size, but they are also available from twin all the way to a regular king. They are also available in an array of colors.

These bamboo sheets have some pretty cool features also. They are thermal regulating, which means they are cool when it is warm and warm when it is cool. They are also among the softest types of bamboo sheets available.

If you are worried about these sheets getting damaged, do not be. The weave style of the Classic Bamboo Sheets by Cariloha is a twill weave, which is the most durable.

These sheets are also naturally hypoallergenic. This means that they do not contain any known allergens and will not be hazardous to those who have highly sensitive skin when it comes to certain materials.

Cons:

Unfortunately, this company makes their products from the least environmentally friendly bamboo fabric available: viscose. The process of creating fabric from viscose bamboo produces a lot of wastewater, releases many toxic chemicals into the environment, and the fabric itself no longer retains any of the benefits from the original bamboo plants.

Again, due to the processing, some of the claims made by Cariloha are straight up false. It is impossible for you to create viscose in an environmentally sustainable way when you are using toxic chemicals to strip and bleach the bamboo fibers and release tons of wastewater.

Final Thoughts:

While viscose from bamboo sheets are by far the worst variation in terms of eco-friendliness, it is also the most available type of bamboo fabric. This is due to the fact that the processing is easy and cheap, and viscose produces the most bamboo fibers. Unfortunately, the other types of bamboo sheets, bamboo linen and bamboo lyocell, are very rare to find and typically very expensive. Basically, unless you want to hold out for one of those types, viscose is the best you are going to find for the price. Cariloha is a great and reliable brand. They even have a lifetime guarantee available for all of their products. However, many reviews have stated that that guarantee is not honored. It may have been a unique situation though. We do not always know all of the specifics, just what the person provides for us.

Classic Bamboo Sheets by Cariloha Conclusion

Overall, the Classic Bamboo Sheets by Cariloha are a pretty good product. While the price is a bit high, you can find cheaper, depending on the size of bed you have. Speaking about the price, you can grab a set of the Cali King sheets for $199.00 on Amazon. The price will go down depending on the size of the bed, but Cali King is the biggest available.
