Earth Day 2019: How You Can Get Involved NOW!
Are you going to take part in Earth Day 2019? Yes, it's April already and that time of year. Spring is in full bloom, and this month many people around the world will be doing their part to help take care of the planet. There will be events held all over the place in an effort to protect Mother Nature, and if you're not familiar with this global event, now is the time to learn.
Hopefully, by the end of this article, you will have a full understanding of this special day and even have a few ideas about how you can join this effort.
What Is Earth Day?
Earth Day is a day set aside to make a collaborative global effort to bring awareness to issues threatening our environment, rethink ways we can help preserve it, and make individual efforts to play a part in taking care of it. It was officially established and first celebrated in 1970 with 193 countries now taking part and holding special events on April 22nd. In some places, an entire week is dedicated to the event with many activities taking place to help combat environmental problems.
In 1969, an oil well blew out in Santa Barbara, California, causing massive amounts of damage to the environment. It created an oil slick in the ocean which resulted in the death of over 10,000 animals and, naturally, angered many people. This event spurred activists to protest for change regarding rules and regulations that have a negative impact on nature. An entire movement was born out of this event, with many countries realizing that a change had to be made to preserve Earth from destruction.
Earth Day is now revered and observed by many. People are encouraged to take action every year and to set aside at least one day to do their part in taking care of the environment. Whether it is contributing money, picking up a piece of trash, or planting a tree, any action great or small is both helpful and thoughtful.
Why Is It Important to Get Involved in Earth Day 2019?
The world we have now is the only one we will ever have, and it's important to take care of it. The actions we take right now will have a huge impact on generations to come and leaving our mess to them is unfair and downright catastrophic. Some of us may even have kids or grandchildren one day, and they are the true victims here.
Some people these days already must deal with issues caused by our mishandling of the earth. For instance, in China and many other parts of Asia, the general public is advised to wear surgical masks during some times of the year. Some refer to this as "yellow dust season" and are concerned that this airborne pollution is a potential cause of cancer. It's so bad at times that people cannot see the stars at night. It's not 100% clear why, but many experts believe this is because of the many factories in China.
Another issue that is cause for concern is global warming. Many people don't believe in it, but there seems to be a lot of evidence to support it. And, those who believe in it will tell you that the reason it is happening is due to the way we have treated the environment. Consider the destruction we have caused to the ozone. It's no secret we have done a lot of damage over the years, and Earth Day can help to combat this.
Earth Day Events 2019
As mentioned previously, there will be all kinds of Earth Day 2019 events unfolding all over the world. One of the most popular kinds of events for Earth Day is a simple 5K run or walk. A quick Google search can help you find events close to your location.
Regardless, some of the biggest events in the United States take place in none other than New York City.
The Earth Day 50th-Anniversary Countdown Art Installation and Action Center
One of the largest events taking place the day right after Earth Day 2019 is the 50th-anniversary countdown art installation and action center. At the event, artists will create environmentally themed art on site and spread awareness of the Green New Deal.
The Green New Deal is a proposed program designed to fight climate change and economic inequality. The anniversary countdown will also give people the opportunity to share their ideas about how best to solve issues related to the environment. It is free and open to the public, so if you are in or around New York City, check it out.
Earth Day 5K Green Tour
Another event in New York City is the Earth Day 2019 5K Green Tour, and what is most exciting about this event is that it is designed to give participants a tour of some of New York's best green areas. If you've ever run a 5K before, then you know how fun they can be. When you sign up to run, you usually get a shirt as a souvenir and are provided with food and entertainment. And, there is always that feeling of accomplishment you get from challenging yourself to complete the 5K and succeeding.
So, how can you get involved in Earth Day 2019? Even if you cannot find any events close to you, you can still get involved by helping contribute in several ways. Again, something as simple as helping to pick up litter can be a great contribution. The Earth Day 2019 official website even has ways you can make monetary donations if you have little free time to get out and about.
Regardless of what you do, any support helps to protect the environment and preserve it for years to come. Sometimes it's the little things that make the most difference.
In any case, have a happy Earth Day 2019 and see if you can find a way to get involved in your community!
