You’ve probably heard the rumor that eating too much red meat is bad for your health. But, protein is an essential part of our diet. Sure, there are other ways to eat protein. However, none are quite as satisfying as a juicy hamburger. But, we all know what comes with a juicy hamburger. Carbs. And fats. Also, calories. Red meat is a great source of protein. But even eating the appropriate amounts of red meat might not be healthy. Luckily, goat meat is a healthier form of red meat than beef, pork, and lamb. That means that you can get the essential nutrients from red meat without the drawbacks. Goat meat is considered the healthiest red meat that you can eat!

Goat Meat Isn’t as Taboo as You Might Think

You might find the idea of eating goat meat to be strange, odd, or even gross. Let me tell you, eating goat  is more natural than eating apple sauce. People that lived thousands of years ago ate it. In the United States, there aren’t many common recipes that call for goat meat. It's prevalent in Indian and Mexican dishes. If you’ve never tried something before, then it can be hard to want to. However, Indian and Mexican cuisine is delicious. Therefore, goat meat can’t be all that bad. In fact, there are plenty of delicious dishes you can make that use goat! You can even substitute goat meat for lamb in a meal because they are similar types of meat.

Goat Meat vs Other Red Meat

Goat meat is considered to be a red meat. There are some distinct differences between goat meat and red meat. For instance, goat meat is healthier than any other form of red meat. There is 31 calories per ounce of goat meat. However, an ounce of beef has 71 calories. An ounce of goat meat has .65 grams of fat, .2 grams of saturated fat, 6.25 grams of protein, and 16 milligrams of cholesterol. An ounce of beef has 4 grams of fat, 2 grams of saturated fat, 6 grams of protein, and 22 milligrams of cholesterol. Overall, goat meat has less fats and more protein than beef. In fact, it has less fat than chicken, and chicken is considered a healthy meat!

Why is Goat Meat the Healthiest Red Meat?

Its low calories, low fats, and low cholesterol make it one of the healthiest red meats to eat. Also, it’s high in protein and iron which are essential parts of a healthy diet. You might be asking, why does goat meat have lower levels of the “bad” stuff and more of the “good” stuff? That’s an easy answer. Goat meat is “raised” differently than beef, pork, or lamb. Goats are free range animals that eat grass. In fact, goats are called a farmer’s lawn mower because they eat a lot of grass. It’s the healthy diet and free lifestyle that keep goats lean and pure. They aren’t force fed unnatural foods like cows often are. Also, goat meat isn’t mass produced so goat farmers don’t feel the pressure to have heavy animals. Overall, goat meat is more organic and raised in a healthier environment.  


In conclusion, goat meat has less fats, calories, and cholesterol than other meats. Also, it has more protein than even a slab of beef! It’s important to eat appropriate portions of any type of food, but especially red meat. If you’re looking for a healthier alternative to beef, pork, or lamb, then goat meat is a great option. You can probably find goat meat at your local grocery store or butcher shop. I know it might be strange, but give it a chance. Who knows? You might even grow to like a juicy goat burger more than a juicy beef burger.
