Halo Natural Dog Food: Review
Review of the Halo Natural Dog Food
Halo Natural Dog Food is one of many holistic dog foods that is quickly gaining popularity. They set themselves apart from the herd with their quality ingredients and essentially organic ideals. Currently, they are hanging out at 4.4 stars on Amazon, as well as showing off their badge for Amazon's Choice. So, let's see what makes Halo so special.
Halo Natural Dog Food is a holistic, dry dog food. Holistic foods are all about being as healthy as possible. This means essentially the same as organic, if not better. Holistic nutrition include unrefined, unprocessed, organic and locally grown foods. While many companies use the term "holistic" for marketing purposes because there are no standards that the food necessarily has to meet to use that claim, it is easy to pick out the marketing from the honest brands just by looking at the ingredients.
Looking at the ingredients is exactly what we are going to do now. The ingredients in Halo Natural Dog Food are as follows: Chicken, Eggs, Pea Protein, Oats, Vegetable Broth, Pearled Barley, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Whole Peas, Chicken Liver, Salmon, Flax Seed, Salmon Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), Pea Fiber, Sweet Potatoes, Apples, Blueberries, Green Beans, Carrots, Cranberries, Zucchini, Alfalfa, Inulin, Calcium Sulfate, Potassium Chloride, Taurine, Salt, Vitamins (Folic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Bitartrate, Niacin, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Ascorbic Acid, Riboflavin Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Biotin), Minerals (Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Cobalt Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus plantarum. As you can tell, there are a lot of great ingredients right off the bat. You do not see any "meal" ingredients, which Halo Natural Dog Food actively avoids as part of their holistic movement. There is also sweet potato, which replaces grains as the source of carbs. The only slight controversial ingredient is pea protein. Even though it contains 80% protein, it typically has a lower biological value than meat, meaning it can be harder to digest. However, since it is paired with many other ingredients that are very easily digestible, the pea protein should not be an issue.
There are a few badges that Halo Natural Dog Food carries. The first is a badge for "Cage Free, Humanely Sourced", which means that all of the meat ingredients included in the dog food were either caught in the wild, in the case of the salmon, or were free-roam, in the case of the chicken most likely. Halo is also certified by GAP, Global Animal Partnership, which verifies that the animals were raised following standards focused on their care and welfare. In addition, they carry a certification by MSC, Marine Stewardship Council, which ensures that any and all seafood was caught within a certified sustainable fishery. All of these seals further prove their holistic intentions.
Halo Natural Dog Food features a lot of great things. For one, they only use whole meat, no meat-meal of any kind. Plus all of their meat is raised or caught in a humane, sustainable manner. Furthermore, Halo does not include or support any factory farming, growth hormones, antibiotics, artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. This is a great feature for the company to partake in because many of those practices, factory farming especially, are causes of land, water, and air pollution. Lastly, all of the fruits and vegetables included in the dog food are sourced from farmland that prohibits the use of GMOs, genetically modified seeds. While the use of GMOs is very controversial and there may be some legitimate benefits to using them, nothing has been proven as of late, so it is better to just go natural.
About This Company
Halo, previously Spot's Stew, is all about holistic and natural pet food. Their mission is to provide the best quality cat and dog food possible, while keeping the sourcing sustainable for the environment. They do not partake in any factory farming practices that raise unhealthy and depressed animals. The company has a lot of passion and drive behind it. The Halo Pet Foundation was founded to help promote responsible pet ownership and help eliminate animal abuse. With every purchase of any of their products, Halo donates a bowl of food to animals in need. The Halo Feed It Forward program has donated more than 1,500,000 bowls of food to shelters every year. Of course, they also support the Humane Society of the United States. Halo also practices 'OrigiNative" sourcing, which is a term trademarked by Halo. Essentially, they foster naturally raised animals, regenerative soils, and environmental balance.
Halo Natural Dog Food is crazy healthy. No "meat-meal" ingredients, only whole meat products.
Part of their holistic style includes ingredients that are not processed or refined. No GMOs, all of their meat and fish are cage free and wildly caught, no antibiotics, artificial flavors, preservatives, colors of any kind.
Halo Natural Dog Food is, for the most part, very easily digestible. There is no grains included, and use sweet potato among other ingredients to make up for the carbs. Flaxseed for Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, which keeps your pups skin, coat and joints healthy.
A caring and passionate company behind the dog food. They have multiple certifications to back up their holistic claims. Not to mention just by looking at their ingredients you can know for sure.
Unfortunately, they are not organic. Their holistic and sustainable practices are great, but it would be nice to see an USDA certification in addition with their other certifications.
It is really hard to find anything bad to say about this dog food. The company is awesome. You can really tell that Halo Natural Dog Food has some great and passionate people behind it. All of the ingredients are top notch, with only pea protein being slightly questionable. The fact that they put so much focus on avoiding factory farms, growth hormones, antibiotics, and so much more is just astounding. The only thing that I could even say negative about this dog food is that it is not certified organic. The fact that it is not is actually surprising. Given that they claim to avoid all of the stuff previously mentioned, makes it seem that having the food certified organic would be relatively easy. Nevertheless, this food seems like it is terrific quality dog food.
