Marley Coffee Organic One Love: Review
Review of the Marley Coffee Organic One Love
Probably the chillest coffee you will ever be a part of. Marley Coffee Organic One Love is definitely special. It currently is chilling at 4.2 stars on Amazon, as well as sporting the badge for Amazon's Choice. Sounds like Amazon is a fan of Bob Marley's son's coffee. Let's get into it and see if we are as well.
Marley Coffee Organic One Love is a medium roast coffee. That being said, it is more of a medium to dark roast, that has a very mild taste. It features a medium body with fruity, aromatic, and winey undertones. You'll find floral notes and sweet berry hints. It is not as sweet tasting as some other medium roasts, and it is also somewhat bitter. However, the bitterness smooths out as you drink it. Overall, a very nice taste and not overpowering or strong. Great for any time of day.
Marley Coffee Organic One Love is a single origin coffee. It is grown in Yirgacheffe growing region which is located in southern Ethiopia. The region is known to produce distinctively citrus and floral toned coffees from traditional varieties of Arabica, long grown in the region. Marley Coffee Organic One Love means to be very specific about where their coffee comes from, and this is very appreciated. While most coffee companies just call their coffee from the country it was sourced, they do little to actually tell you the region or the farm it was grown. Marley Coffee zeroes it down to the region at least, which is awesome.
This one has a bunch of indications behind it. To start off, it is USDA Organic certified. A must have for organic coffee as it proves that the coffee was grown and processed organically. Past that, it is Kosher, which only a handful of companies have. But the coffee also supports "Kicks for a Cause" which donates 10% of their proceeds to a charity of the customer's choice. This is a very unique organization as it stays personal to the customer. Beyond that, Marley coffee is also labeled as ITAL. ITAL is a food that is celebrated by those in the Rastafarian movement. This should come to no surprise as the owner of Marley Coffee is Bob Marley's son.
About This Company
Rohan Marley was inspired to create Marley coffee after visiting his father's land in Jamaica. This was the start of his company in 1999. He enlisted current Marley Coffee CEO Brent Toevs and the company took off. In the original farm, Marley laid down some ground rules. The farmers were not allowed to use any chemicals on the land. He said "If they were building a business that was going to make my life better, I wanted to make the community's life better." Back in the day, Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee was some of the most expensive coffee in the world, and it was not very sustainable. He continued to learn how to manage his farm for the next 7 years.
In 2006, Rohan visited an Ethiopian monastery, which helped tie the coffee to his Rastafarian religion. After that, he realized that he did not need to be a purely Jamaican coffee company, he could go worldwide. Now, the company sources beans from Ethiopia, Central and South America, and of course Jamaica. All of them are sustainably grown and ethically farmed. Rohan officially founded the business in 2007, incorporated it under the name Jammin Java in 2009, and products hit shelves in 2012.
Marley Coffee works with Water Wise Coffee, which is a company that helps coffee mills in Ethiopia reduce water use, compost coffee waste, plant grass wetlands, and build aquifers and filtering systems. In 2014, Marley had contributed more than $80,000 to the organization. They also teamed up for a documentary that focused on coffee farmers in Ethiopia.
The company has many ties and investments in organically grown products, ethically farmed coffee, and the Rainforest Alliance.
All of Marley Coffee is organic with a few variations also carrying the certification for the Rainforest Alliance. Organic One Love is also Kosher, ITAL, and supports Kicks for a Cause.
One Love, along with a lot of coffee from Marley Coffee is single origin. This specific coffee is grown in the Yirgacheffe region of southern Ethiopia.
The coffee is also 100% Arabica beans. It has some bitterness but it fades as you drink. The flavor and undertones create a very good taste for the coffee. Though it is more on the dark roast side than medium.
Marley Coffee Organic One Love has a great company behind it. Marley Coffee does a lot that helps with conservation and providing equal pay to their farmers.
From looking at recent customer reviews, it seems that the last batch of Marley Coffee Organic One Love might have been a bad roast. Many people have reported that it did not taste like regular One Love. This could be a fluke roast that was distributed by accident. Or they may have changed up the recipe. Either that or the customers reporting this got bad batches themselves, seeing as it was only a handful of people.
It is also only available in one size. 8 ounces is all you can get from each purchase. This may be due to the availability of the coffee.
This is one great medium roast coffee. Marley Coffee Organic One Love certainly seems to have a great taste, not to mention plenty of certification seals to back up their claims. The company in general is pretty great as well. The work that Rohan Marley put into building this company and the passion behind it all is awe inspiring. Even if you take the company out of the equation, Marley Coffee Organic One Love is still a great roast. Though it does seem to be more on the darker side, it all evens out in the end.
Marley Coffee Organic One Love Conclusion
Overall, Marley Coffee Organic One Love is a great roast. Hopefully the issue with the supposedly bad roast is a one time thing and not a new recipe. We'll let you decide. Right now you can pick up an 8 ounce bag of One Love for $6.99 on Amazon. For any other information of the best organic coffee, head on back to Green and Growing.
