The Consumption of Sandwiches and Meat Is Responsible for Global Warming
Even if it may sound shocking, scientists blame the consumption of sandwiches and meat for global warming. British scientists have developed a new study which reveals this strange connection between global warming and eating sandwiches. Scientists at the University of Manchester have announced on January 25 the results of their newest study.
Their research is one of the first to focus on the carbon footprint of sandwiches, irrespective if we are talking about pre-packaged ones or home-made ones. Most likely, meat eaters will not be satisfied with the results. The research has unveiled that the sandwiches that contain pork meat, like sausage, ham, and bacon, and also prawns and cheese, had the highest carbon footprint.
Furthermore, the “all-day breakfast” sandwich that contains sausage, bacon, and egg was revealed to emit the same amount of carbon dioxide as driving a car for 12 miles. Isn’t that striking? The study takes into account all the processes through which the meat goes. Hence, it considers the emissions from the pig farms to the ones in the production process in the food industry.

No one would think that this is an actual fact. Unfortunately, no matter how much we try to deny it, it is the truth. The carbon footprint of these products is way bigger than we have ever thought. Raising cattle in farms to slaughter them and use the meat in the food industry has even a greater impact. Every year farmers use gallons of water for their animals to drink. Furthermore, a lot more water is used when growing and cultivating the wheat and corn which is then used as livestock’s food.
Hence, the production of sandwiches and meat does not only increase the levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, it also consumes a huge amount of water. Potable water is limited, and there are several countries in the world where people die of thirst. While some have no water to drink, others give millions of gallons of water to their livestock, raising them for food.
The impact of carbon emissions
The study has also indicated that the residents in the UK consume about 11.5 billion sandwiches every year. This sums up to a huge amount of meat. This, in turn, means a wide number of pigs and cattle to raise. When the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases, it can trap sunlight, gradually increasing temperatures.
The increase in temperature can trigger numerous abnormalities when it comes to weather patterns. That is why the year 2017 was declared by scientists to be the hottest one on record. Numerous heatwaves have affected different areas on the globe. Besides the high temperatures, high levels of greenhouse gas emissions also lead to air pollution. Air pollution kills millions of people every year, causing respiratory diseases and lung cancer.
Numerous countries have implemented different sets of rules, trying to cut down on carbon emissions. Some of them gave up on the use of coal, like China. The government decided to impose very strict regulations, and it has even closed a few power plants. The results are incredible since they have managed to win the war against air pollution, at least for now.
If policymakers all over the world want to accomplish the Paris agreement goal, we should all start working on it. We need to diminish our carbon imprint. It does not matter whether this carbon footprint consists in consuming a sandwich or driving your car to work instead of walking. The most important thing is to do our best to succeed. In this way, our global warming problem would solve. Future generations will not be forced to live in a polluted environment.
