Initial Thoughts

When it comes to peanut butter, there are a lot of options to choose from. Not all choices are the same. Many of the peanut butter products consumed are extremely high calorie and contain a large amount of fat and sugars. Sure, they taste great, but peanut butter can really expand the waistline. The key to healthy peanut butter is cutting the artificial ingredients, and finding all natural ingredients that are full of nutrients, specifically protein. Santa Cruz Organic Peanut Butter has made a great tasting peanut butter using only the necessary ingredients.

Ingredients

Santa Cruz Organic Peanut Butter uses only the necessary ingredients needed to make any nut butter. The nut and less than 1% of salt. In this case, the nut is organic Santa Cruz Organic Peanut Butterroasted peanuts. That is literally it, there is not added sugar, no oils, no preservatives. Because there are no extra ingredients, this product is gluten free, Non-GMO, USDA certified Organic and 100% vegan. So if you are looking for just the bare bones of peanut butter, this is the stuff for you!

Specifics

When looking at the nutritional facts for Santa Cruz Organic Peanut Butter, it looks all pretty much the same as most. However, there are a few differences that do matter. Checking out the nutritional facts, here is what you will be getting. 180 total calories, none from fat. Total fat is 16g, with 2g of saturated fat. Only 55 mg of sodium. 5g of carbs, including 3g of dietary fiber and 1g of sugar. And closing it with 8g of protein.

Now, there are some slight differences from other brands here. The first is the sodium count. Laura Scudder's Natural Peanut Butter is of the lowest amounts of sodium we have seen here. Only 55mg are included. The second difference is the protein value. This has a slightly higher amount of protein than other brands, which is a great thing to see.

Organic Peanut Butter

The term "natural" is thrown around a lot when it comes to marketing and branding products. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot of regulations or standards around that term. It is not like Organic, which has a seal certified by the USDA behind it to back up the claims. However, the natural world is not a barren wasteland. For a product to be labelled natural peanut butter, it has to contain 90% peanuts with no artificial sweeteners, colors, or preservatives. But that is pretty much it. Many natural peanut butter products still contain a bunch of stuff that you probably do not want in your body. So what does the best natural peanut butter actually have in it? Well peanuts of course, and a pinch of salt. That is it. Honestly, that is literally it. No oils, no sugars, so additives. Just peanuts and salt. A bit surprising right?

There are a lot of "natural" peanut butter products out there and most of the time you have to struggle with that weird separation of the oils from the butter. This is because they add various oils in the butter to give it that consistency and to make it easier to spread. And you will get this issue with the best natural peanut butter as well, but it will be rare.

Separation

Truly natural peanut butter does have natural oils which may separate from the butter, but it will not be as much as when other oils are added. Because of the nature of the ingredients in organic peanut butter, the product will separate. Without proper mixing, the peanut butter will be very oily and runny. It can be hard to spread and it may create a big mess. When you first open the bottle, make sure to mix it thoroughly. Light separation may happen again, and additional stirring may be required. Santa Cruz Organic Peanut Butter, like any other all-natural peanut butter, will also need to be refrigerated if you don’t plan on finishing it within a month of opening it. The oils that separate can go rancid. Be aware of this problem, especially if you live in a really warm place.

About This Company

Santa Cruz Organic started back in the early 1970s, when the founder, John Bettendieri, began revitalizing orchards in the Santa Cruz Mountains. In 1972, Battendieri pressed his first batch of "Mr. Natural" apple juice, making it one of the first packaged organic products. All of their ingredients are sustainably farmed, and they work closely with Kyle Mathison of Stemilt Farms. In addition, their ingredients are also all grown organically. Now, Santa Cruz Organic offers more than 50 organic items ranging from fruit juices and lemonades, to fruit sauces, chocolate syrups, peanut butters, and fruit spreads, available nationwide.

Pros:

Santa Cruz Organic Peanut Butter plays no games. They only use dry roasted peanuts and salt. No additives, no preservatives, no added sugar. only the stuff necessary for making peanut butter.

This peanut butter is entirely organic, vegan, GMO-free, Kosher, dairy free, and has no trans fats. Nothing has been added except for the most natural ingredients. Oh, and it is 100% made in the USA.

The low content of sodium and higher protein value is absolutely awesome. This shows that a product can be good for you, even without the chemicals and artificial additives.

Santa Cruz Organic Peanut Butter managed to make a truly creamy peanut butter without the use of added sugars or oils. This is the most natural "creamy" peanut butter you are going to find.

Cons:

Few customers have complained about their jars arriving broken, which is unfortunate, but hardly the fault of the brand.

Others have said that while this is advertised as "roasted", the taste is very similar to other local peanut butters, and not as "robust" as they thought.

The biggest backdraw of this brand is that it is only available from 3rd party sellers. This is bad because it is hard to tell how long the product was in their warehouse for, and the conditions it was kept in.

Final Thoughts:

Most of the peanuts used in organic peanut butter are labeled as roasted because they are in fact roasted. However, when making them into the butter you are eating, that roasted flavor will fade and become more and more subtle. For that reason, you will probably not get that robust taste you may expect from a "roasted" peanut butter. In terms of the broken jars, that is probably the fault of the shipper and how they were shipped. It is unfortunate and a general annoyance, but it happens, especially with glass jars. The broken jars on arrival may very well be due to the fact that the product was ordered from 3rd party sellers.

Santa Cruz Organic Peanut Butter Conclusion

Overall, Santa Cruz Organic Peanut Butter is a great natural peanut butter. Possibly among the best brands we have reviewed here. Unfortunately, you can only get this peanut butter from 3rd party sellers, and not from Santa Cruz directly, not even on their website. But if you want to try it out for yourself, you can grab a 16 oz jar for about $5.99.
