Showering in Hot Water Isn’t Healthy For Your Skin
My husband and I often debate about what the perfect shower temperature is. He claims that slightly cold water is the best temperature to shower in. On the other hand, I think that hot water is that best temperature to shower in. It’s relaxing and makes me feel cleaner. I mean, hot water kills bacteria, right? Well, that’s true. However, showering in hot water isn’t healthy for your skin. Now, I can’t shower in really hot water. But, I know for a fact that I shower in water that’s probably too hot to be healthy for my skin. You don’t need to change the way your shower, completely. However, if you shower in really hot water, then you might want to rethink part of your shower routine.
What Does Hot Water Do to Your Skin?
That’s a great question. Our skin is sensitive. Hot water can severely irritate your skin. It can cause redness and rashes. Sometimes, it can even cause your skin to peel. Also, hot water destroys your body’s natural oils. These oils help to keep your skin moisturized and healthy. Your body was built to take care of itself, in many ways. One of those ways is to produce oils to keep your skin healthy. Basically, hot water dries up your skin. When your skin is dry, your body overcompensates by producing too much oil. Also, you are more susceptible to illness when your skin is dry. If your body’s out of balance, then it can throw off your immune system. Plus, if you’re like me, you spend a lot of money on lotions and creams to try and re-hydrate dry patches of skin. That’s a costly solution, let me tell you.

It doesn’t take much to solve this problem. A simple solution would be to lower the temperature of your water when you shower. If you choose to do this, then you should expect an adjustment period. We become settled into certain routines. Even straying, slightly, from a routine is noticeable. However, you don’t need to lower the temperature every time you shower. A few times a week will show you results. Another solution is to take shorter showers. The shorter amount of time that you’re in the water, the less dried out your skin will become. Thirdly, you should avoid using harsh soaps. Dry skin is easily irritated and you wouldn’t want to add insult to injury. Lastly, you can use moisturizer. It can be costly. However, a combination of these solutions will help to keep your skin healthy.
In conclusion, showering in hot water dries out your skin. There are many ways that you can help your skin when it dries out. Adjusting your shower routine can also help to reverse the effects of hot water. It doesn’t have to be a drastic adjustment. Even something as simple as switching your soap can help moisturize your skin. I love hot showers, but even I have to admit that healthy skin is worth the adjustment.
