Taste of the Wild, Canine Formula is one of many grain-free dog foods out there. Currently, it is holding at 4.4 stars, and carries a badge for Amazon's Choice. So Amazon recommends this brand, and people seem to like it. Let's see if it matches up to our standards.
Taste of the Wild, Canine formula is what companies call a "grain-free" dog food. grain-free dog food is becoming increasingly popular, many people are under the impression that this means the food is carb-free.This is not always the case. Carbohydrates are not only found in grains. In fact, dry dog food is impossible to make without carbs. So instead of using grain for carbs, they have to use something else. Many people attribute the risk of diabetes with grains. However, they are not entirely the problem. Eating too much of anything form of carbohydrates can increase the risk of diabetes. In fact, with many grain-free varieties of dog food, the calorie count can be much higher, which people do not realize. Luckily, Taste of the Wild, Canine Formula has a very decent calorie count, as well as a feeding chart on their website to help owners who are confused about how much to feed their dog.
There are a lot of ingredients in Taste of the Wild, Canine Formula. Thankfully, they are all natural and none of them are artificial.
The only certification that Taste of the Wild holds is a certification by AAFCO. AAFCO is the Association of American Feed Control Officials. The only thing this seal tells consumers is that this dog food meets the nutritional levels estabilished by the AAFCO. The food is not organic, gluten-free, hypoallergenic, or anything else. Only grain-free.
There are a few pretty cool features of this dog food. For one, they feature a species-specific probiotics for healthy digestive and immune systems. About This Company
Taste of the Wild is manufactured by Diamond Pet Food, which is a family owned business based out of Meta, Missouri. However, they do not mention their parent company anywhere on their website. This could be due to the fact that Diamond Pet Food has a history with recalls of their products. The only recall that occurred with Taste of the Wild was in 2012. This was a voluntary recall resulting from the potential contamination from Samonella bacteria. But there have been no incidents since 2012. This was part of the whole Diamond Pet Food recall. It was not only restricted to Taste of the Wild.
They have 5 US-based manufacturing facilities, two in California, one in Missouri, one in Arkansas, and one in South Carolina. While most of their ingredients are sourced from the US, there are several ingredients that are internationally sourced. Their lamb comes from New Zealand, potato protein from Germany, chicory from Belgium, and select nutrients from China. So even though they claim on their Amazon page that this food is made in the USA, various ingredients are foreign sourced.
Along with their premium dry dog foods, they also manufacture 5 types of canned dog food, and several varieties of dry and canned cat food.
Taste of the Wild, Canine Formula includes only natural ingredients. All of their ingredients are natural and do not include any added or artificial colors, flavors, or otherwise.
Even though grain-free dog food has a lot of skepticism behind it, it does not mean it is bad or useless. Grain-free usually is much higher in protein, and Taste of the Wild is in fact. They also have a standard calorie count and a feeding chart to help maintain your dog's diet.
This dry dog food is full of probiotics, antioxidants, protein, and Omega 3 fatty acids. All of which help your pup live a full and healthy life.
There are unfortunately no seals to indicate if the food is certified organic or otherwise. Then again, this brand does not claim to be organic, only grain free, which you can prove by looking at their ingredients.
The parent company has a long history of recalling their products due to contamination. Thankfully, Taste of the Wild has not had a recall since 2012.
There are some select ingredients that are not US sourced. Their international sources include New Zealand, Belgium, Germany, and China.
Taste of the Wild, Canine Formula is a decent grain-free dog food. However, the fact that they source some of their ingredients internationally is a bit concerning. Foreign sourced ingredients tend to not be the best quality, especially those coming from China. This is because other countries do not have the same standards as the US, resulting is lower quality and cheaper ingredients. Though the ingredients are all natural, the foreign sourced ones are actually major ingredients.
Taste of the Wild, Canine Formula Conclusion
Due to the foreign sourced ingredients, it is a little hard to fully recommend this product. While the all natural ingredients are nice, the major ingredients come from other countries including China. Nevertheless, if you do not care about that issue, then be my guest and grab a bag for your pup. Right now, you will only have to pay $16.62 for a 5 pound bag on Amazon.
