It does not affect the coffee when you brew a cup, but you can at least know you are keeping people safe. However, is your morning cup of coffee healthy? It depends. There are factors you have to take into consideration, like how much you drink and the other ingredients you add. There are some great health benefits that come from drinking coffee though.
How Coffee Is Healthy
In an observational study, people who drank four or more cups of coffee each day had a 64 percent lower risk of early death. The risk was especially lower for the people who were over 45 years of age, which implies that the health benefits of coffee increase as people grow older. Another study shows that coffee drinkers tend to live longer than non-coffee drinkers, regardless of if they chose regular or decaf. One reason why this beverage can be healthy is because it contains a large number of antioxidants. Many of the antioxidants occur naturally in the bean, but others appear after roasting the beans. This can reduce the risk of several different diseases, including type 2 diabetes, liver disease, colorectal cancer, skin cancer, and Alzheimer’s.
Precautions to Drinking Too Much
While most people can experience the benefits of this beverage without any concerns, some people will need to monitor how much they consume. For example, pregnant women should not exceed 200 milligrams of caffeine each day, which is about how much a 12-ounce cup of coffee contains. There are not any studies to prove that 200 milligrams or less has any effect on the developing fetus, but exceeding that amount may not be safe.
People with heart conditions like an irregular heartbeat or hypertension will want to limit their caffeine intake as well. Caffeine can speed up one’s heart rate, which will lead to negative results. Generally, a cup or two a day is fine, but those who are especially sensitive may want to avoid caffeine entirely. It is also important to note that even decaf contains caffeine. It is drastically less than a regular cup, but it still contains it. If you prefer to drink decaf, limit yourself to three drinks a day.
For others who are not pregnant or suffering from heart conditions, there is still a precaution. If you add cream or sugar to your drink, you can drastically increase your calorie and fat intake. Be sure to take it easy on those ingredients or try adding milk instead. If you have trouble falling asleep, you should also avoid drinking coffee before going to bed. Getting enough sleep is crucial to living a healthy lifestyle.
Like many other things in life, you can have too much of a good thing. Drinking coffee is healthy for many people and decreases their risk of early death. It even reduces their risk for a handful of serious diseases. However, it is not healthy in great amounts or with too much cream or sugar. It depends on your health and what your body can handle.
