High protein diets are common but may not be a healthy way to try and lose weight. Eating too much protein has been shown to have health risks and may not be necessary to have healthy eating habits.
Typically, protein is stored as fat when amino acids are be excreted. Over time, your body will not be able to break down the fat cells and your weight will increase. Also, protein holds more calories than most other foods. A small steak may hold up to 1,000 calories! In addition, too much protein causes people to feel lethargic and tired. That’s why a post-Thanksgiving nap is often required after eating plates and plates of turkey! Feeling lethargic makes it more difficult to exercise, which, is the primary method used to burn more calories than you eat.
Your body is designed to react to the foods that you eat. Large amounts of protein make you feel lethargic and tired. Those feelings tell the body to go into a metabolic state called ketosis. Ketosis produces a chemical that smells of fruit, but that often makes your breath smell bad. It’s difficult to get rid of the smell because it isn’t caused by teeth or the tongue, it’s caused by a chemical reaction.
Constipation or Diarrhea
High protein diets often exclude fiber. Fiber is essential for a healthy digestive system. Without fiber, many people have reported to have trouble with bowel movements. Essentially, people with low fiber diets have constipation and unhealthy bowel movements. On the contrary, some people may have diarrhea if their body doesn’t react well to dairy. Dairy is often consumed in high protein diets. Either way, eating too much protein has a negative effect on your digestive system.
Your kidney’s work overtime daily in order to get rid of toxins in your body. Protein has high levels of nitrogen which the kidneys have a hard time breaking down. Like anything else, kidneys will “break” if they are over worked. Eating too much protein overloads the kidneys and could decrease functionality. It can also increase your risk of kidney stones because too much protein is often paired with too much calcium.
Proteins have high amounts of cholesterol and saturated fats, which the body doesn’t process well. High levels of cholesterol and saturated fats put strain on the heart and blood vessels. Your risk of heart disease increases when your body has too much cholesterol and saturated fats. Some proteins do not necessarily put you at risk for heart disease. Those proteins are fish, nuts, and poultry. Regardless, eating too much protein has been linked to an increase risk of heart disease.
How Much Protein Isn't Too Much Protein?
On average, men need 56 grams of protein a day and women need 46 grams of protein a day. Naturally, the amount of food a body needs depends on the body’s size and type. Some other diet options include a well-balanced diet, eating smaller portions, and varying your food choices. In conclusion, eating too much protein isn’t necessarily healthy and has some health risks. From gaining weight to an increased risk of heart disease, eating too much protein can hurt your body. Protein is necessary for a balanced diet and, in appropriate portions, can have major health benefits. As it turns out though, too much protein is too much.
