Item Specifics

Nature's Gate Natural Toothpaste is one of many fluoride free toothpaste brands. The reasoning behind the elimination of fluoride is because fluoride is considered toxic to the body, but only when ingested at low to high amounts. However, it is also a big ingredient that prevents tooth decay and cavities. And since toothpaste is not meant to be swallowed, the addition of fluoride has been standard in toothpastes for decades. The biggest case for fluoride-free toothpastes is when there is a small child in the equation. Children tend to eat just about anything. So if they were to accidentally swallow their toothpaste, it could potentially be toxic to them.

While Nature's Gate Natural Toothpaste does qualify as a natural toothpaste, it is not 100% natural. In fact, Nature's Gate acknowledges this by labeling their bottle "97% Natural", instead of either hiding it or claiming that they are 100% natural like many other brands. Nevertheless, the artificial ingredients are not inherently bad. The ingredients for Nature's Gate Natural Toothpaste are as follows: Calcium Carbonate, Glycerin, Water (Eau), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Xanthan Gum, Flavor (Aroma/arôme)*, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint/menthe poivrée) Oil, Quillaja Saponaria (Soap Bark/buisson à savon) Root Extract, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea/thé blanc) Leaf Extract, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate/grenade) Fruit Extract, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry/canneberge) Fruit Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape/raisin) Seed Extract, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger/gingembre) Root Extract, Sodium Bicarbonate, Calcium Glycerophosphate, Bisabolol, Menthol. *Natural Flavor *Arôme naturel.

Things to Know About Glycerin

Now a few things to keep you from freaking out over the ingredients. Number one, glycerin. There is a lot of controversy around glycerin being bad for your teeth. Basically, the claim is that glycerin creates a thin film over your teeth that keeps them from remineralizing. However, the science around glycerin is that is dissolves in water. So that claim begins to loose truth. However, glycerin can not dissolve in oil, which Nature's Gate Natural Toothpaste contains. That being said, and since I am not an expert chemist, just by looking at the facts, the claims around glycerin seem to be totally false. And since the peppermint oil used here does not stay on your teeth, I think it is safe to say that neither will the glycerin. Number two, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate. No, this SLS is not the same as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. While both are foaming agents, Lauroyl Sarcosinate is much milder and far safer to use.

The only "certification" that Nature's Gate Natural Toothpaste carries is a seal for "Non-GMO". This indicates that none of the natural ingredients used here contain any genetically modified organisms. Which is great because GMOs are a current problem with vegetables from factory farms, so seeing that label on this toothpaste is actually very nice. Beyond that, there are not any more certifications, however Nature's Gate Natural Toothpaste does claim a lot.

According to Nature's Gate, you are avoiding a lot of things by buying this toothpaste. Honestly, the Amazon title for this toothpaste is a bit ridiculous, but it certainly gets the point across. This natural toothpaste is not only fluoride free, but it is also Vegan, Non-GMO, Carageenan free Gluten free, Soy free, Paraben free, Cruelty free, and recyclable. Try saying that 5 times fast. However, all jokes aside, this is actually pretty great and it seems that Nature's Gate has gone to great lengths to ensure that their toothpaste is holding up to good standards.

About This Company

Nature's Gate was started in 1972 by 2 brothers in Venice Beach, California. It all started when they wanted to create a shampoo by only using the freshest and cleanest ingredients from the Earth. This began their innovative idea of using rainwater as their primary ingredient. Nature's Gate is well aware of the current state of the world's fresh water supply and wants to do everything they can to help with that. This is what sparked the creation of the very first rainwater herbal shampoo.

Since 2008, Nature's Gate has been a proud partner of WaterAid. An organization that helps to support the development of sustainable uses for rainwater and help communities, families, and children, in Africa, Asia, and South America, to obtain long term access to safe, clean water.

Now, Nature's Gate has a wide selection of products from body care to sun care, all using their same rainwater ingredient. This obviously includes a good selection of natural toothpastes. Three flavors of their Creme line, four flavors in their gel line, and even a toothpaste made specifically for kids.

Nature's Gate Natural Toothpaste, while it isn't 100% natural, they never claim that it is. In fact, they say so right on the bottle that it is 97% natural. They are very transparent and do not try to hide anything. In addition, on their website they even justify some of their ingredients to some extent. Since the science behind glycerin does not back up the claim about it leaving film on your teeth, I think it is fairly safe to use.

This natural toothpaste does not contain any GMOs in their plant based ingredients. This is awesome because GMOs are such a big problem when sourcing ingredients from factory farms and such. Plus, it furthers their natural mission.

Nature's Gate is a pretty great company that is doing what a lot of others are not. That is caring about the amount of freshwater left in the world. They are partnered with WaterAid that is actively trying to help unfortunate children by giving them more access to fresh water by taking advantage of rainwater. Nature's Gate even uses Rainwater in their products.

Here comes that ridiculous Amazon title again, though it is still great to see. Nature's Gate Natural Toothpaste is Vegan, Non-GMO, Carageenan free Gluten free, Soy free, Paraben free, Cruelty free, and recyclable.

There have been multiple reports from some consumers saying that they do not like the consistency of the toothpaste. They have been saying that it is too watery and not enough like a paste. This is actually believable because of the rainwater focus from Nature's Gate.

Even though Nature's Gate acknowledges that their ingredients are not 100% natural, it is still somewhat disappointing to see that. There are a lot of natural toothpastes that achieve their natural ingredients with ease.

Final Thoughts:

Even though Nature's Gate is only 97% natural, the ingredients featured here are nevertheless top quality stuff. They have countless health benefits. For example, the peppermint oil, baking soda and calcium are natural strengthening components which also help remove plague. The vitamin C and baking soda also help to clean and whiten your teeth naturally. In addition, the herbs included here are sustainably sourced. So regardless of the non-natural ingredients used here, this is a pretty great toothpaste.
