You’ve probably watched a television show or a Facebook video about tiny houses. People simplifying their life by living in really small spaces. I know some media companies have had their employees try to live in a tiny-home with a stranger or friends. It tests relationships and gives you an idea of what it would be like to switch to a tiny-house. The tiny-house movement is becoming more popular as people are realizing the benefits that come with it. Some people live in small spaces with children. Some live alone in these tiny spaces. Overall, the tiny-house movement can benefit you personally and environmentally. Let’s take a look at home the tiny-house movement can help the environment.

Why Go With the Tiny-House Movement?

There are three main reasons that people switch over to tiny-living. The first is their concern for the environment and their impact on the environment. Next, is their financial concerns. Lastly, they switch for personal freedom and to become one with nature. I know that it sounds “hippie-esque”, but, there are some major health benefits that come with being out in nature. You can buy a tiny space or make one yourself. Some people refurbish old buses while others build tiny-houses on firm foundations. There’s a lot that you can do with a tiny-house and that’s why the tiny-house movement is becoming more popular.

Your Environmental Impact

It’s not a secret that everything we do has an impact on the environment. Both positive and negative. The way we choose to live our lives is a personal decision. However, you can live in a way that effects the environment less than the average person. The tiny-house movement is one of those ways of living.  

Building

You use fewer materials when you build a tiny-house than when you build an average-sized house. Tiny-houses are smaller, therefore, it’s natural that you would use less materials. If there’s less materials to use, then there’s less waste once the house is finished. Next, it’s easier to install environmentally friendly appliances and supplies. This is because you have less space to work with. Therefore, you don’t need heavy-duty equipment to heat the house. Also, the less appliances that you have the less that need to be replaced. Instead of having 5 sinks that could break, you only have 2 sinks to worry about. That makes it easier to maintain the integrity of the sinks. Overall, it takes less materials to build the houses. Therefore, it’s better for the environment.  

Reduces Energy Use

When you live in a smaller home, you have less appliances. If you don’t have as many appliances to use, then you don’t need to use as much energy. Also, a smaller spaces means that you use less energy to heat it during the winter time. Lastly, one of the reasons that you live in small spaces is to become more familiar with nature. Typically, when you live in a smaller home, you spend more time outdoors. Every minute that you spend outdoors is a minute less that you use energy inside of your home.

There's Less Waste

Living in a smaller space means that you don’t have enough room for the things that you don’t need. Therefore, you make it a point to only keep the essentials. There’s less waste this way. You’re more likely to make the most of the things that you do have. Therefore, you don’t waste as much food, product, or other items.

In conclusion, there are many benefits for following the tiny-house movement. From spending less on housing to helping out the environment. Living in a tiny-house uses less harmful materials and produces less waste. Overall, the tiny-house movement is something you can consider if you want to make less of an impact on the environment. However, there are plenty of other ways that you can help the environment without downsizing.
